Why you need investor presentation tips

A great investor presentation is essential when raising funds.

Whether you’re pitching venture capitalists, private equity firms or strategic investors, the best way to win investor confidence is through a well-crafted presentation that tells a compelling narrative about your business, your market and your growth potential.

By presentation, I mean more than your deck – you need a great story, a great deck AND you need to have great meetings.

Of course, you know your organisation inside out.  The real question is: are you certain you can give a compelling and engaging investor presentation?

Over the last 15 years at Benjamin Ball Associates we’ve coached hundreds of teams to be brilliant at presenting to investors: venture capital, private equity and institutional investors.

How do you plan a winning investor presentation?

Preparing an investor presentation that succeeds is a real skill.  And it’s a skill you can learn.

Study these ten investor presentation tips so that your next investor presentation leaves you – and your investors – smiling and happy.

Let’s explore each of these investor presentation tips in more detail:

1. Start your route to pitch success by preparing properly

The first of the investor presentation tips is never start with PowerPoint.

Before you open PowerPoint, take time to think hard about your business, target market, and unique value proposition. The best presentations are clear about what makes you special and why now is the right time to invest.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s our core investment message?
  • Who are our prospective investors and what matters most to them?
  • How will we best show our company’s value proposition and growth potential?

A successful presentation starts long before you build your slide deck. Great preparation is the best way to avoid common mistakes and create a presentation that resonates.

When we work with our clients, we usually begin the process with a Messaging Cracker Session, to identify the core investor messages and the investor narrative.  This then underpins the entire investor presentation.

Similarly, you should research each investor to better understand what’s important to them.  This means you can adapt your story to address what that investor needs and wants.

A 2014 study by Qvidian revealed that teams often lose deals because they haven’t customised their content to their audience’s needs. Never rely on investor presentation templates.

“It’s not supposed to be easy. If it was, then everyone would do it.”
Charles Dunstone, founder of Carphone Warehouse

2. Build a compelling investment narrative

Every investment presentation needs a story. The best ones connect facts with emotion. Factual data, like performance, market and financial data combine with emotional elements, such as stories, case studies and client examples.

Tell the story behind your business and highlight your key milestones. Explain what problem you’re solving and why your solution is different. Showcase your competitive advantage, market opportunities and clear vision for the future.

A compelling investor presentation ties these strands together into a single, persuasive narrative that makes investors want to learn more.

Once you have your investment narrative, this runs like a red thread through your teaser, your introduction and your full management presentation.

3. Begin with a strong executive summary

Investors are busy. Begin with an executive summary that captures your key points in a minute or less. Outline your market size, your customer base, your business model and your momentum.

Think of this as your elevator pitch: a short, confident overview that sets up the rest of your presentation. A strong start helps your audience understand where you’re heading and builds early investor interest.

For your pitch deck, this means a powerful page 1 & page 2 that clearly lays out the investment case.

Read more about how to create a powerful executive summary.

Investor presentations are the ultimate first impressions test.  And like all first impressions, it’s a one-time deal. There are no second chances. So it makes sense to prepare a start that grab attention and get people excited.

4. Demonstrate you know your market

Show that you know your target market inside out. Use credible market research, clear data points, and examples to bring your insights to life.

Investors want to see that you understand the competitive landscape, how your business fits within it and what your competitive edge is.

Back up your statements with evidence: charts, visual aids, and even short case studies work well. This builds trust and shows you’ve done your due diligence.

You must be able to explain why customers buy from you, and how you stand out from the competition.

5. Show that you are the best management team

A tight, well-prepared team is like a sponge cake straight out of the oven. Ingredients together create something much greater than the sum of the parts.

Whereas, if your team contradicts, interrupts or ignores one another, investors will doubt your credibility.  Instead, your interactions should be positive and seamless.

Explain what makes your team exceptional: their experience, complementary skills and responsibilities. A united team with a clear vision and core message creates a strong impression and reassures investors that you can deliver.

Investors invest in people before products.

6. Present your numbers with confidence

Your financial model is where credibility is either built or lost. Present your key metrics, examples of momentum, revenue streams and cash flow clearly and confidently.

A key investment presentation tip is to highlight key metrics such as customer acquisition cost, lifetime value, margins and growth rate. If you’ve hit major milestones or secured strategic partnerships, include them; they demonstrate momentum and investment readiness.

Remember, simplicity beats complexity. Use charts, tables and stories to make financial information easy to grasp.

7. Make your investor pitch deck work hard

Your investor pitch deck or slide deck should reinforce your spoken message, not repeat it. Keep slides visually clean and include less information, not more.

Some key elements of your pitch deck include the problem that you are solving, your customer base, business model, market size, competition, key financials and investment thesis. Add visual highlights such as timelines, charts, or customer logos. Read more investor presentation tips on how to create a winning pitch deck.

Each slide should serve one purpose: to help investors understand your story and remember the key elements of your business.

8. Have a dialogue, not a monologue

The most persuasive presentations are conversations. Encourage questions throughout your next investor presentation and be ready to adapt on the spot.

Ask for feedback as you go:

  • “Does that fit with what you’re seeing in the market?”
  • “Would you like to see the data behind those numbers?”

An open, confident tone helps build rapport and shows you can handle challenge; something every investor looks for.

9. Prepare thoroughly for investor questions

Expect tough questions, especially about your business plan, financial projections and exit strategy. Anticipate what investors or analysts might ask during due diligence meetings.

Investors get frustrated by presenters who avoid, second-guess or provide scrambled answers to questions.  Remember, it is their job to ask questions and be critical.

It’s best practise and an essential investor presentation tip to prepare yourself for the Q&A session as much as you do for the fundraising presentation itself.  Before pitching to investors, look at your presentation objectively: what are the areas you are most likely to be challenged on?

Avoid being defensive or taking criticism personally.  Prepare your answers and rehearse delivering them confidently together as a team. The last thing you want is your team being surprised by each other’s answers.  Again, do extensive on-camera practice to prepare your team for Q&A. Read more about how to answer investor questions.

When we rehearse management teams, we cover a wide range of challenging questions so that the management team feels comfortable – no matter how tough the questions become.

10. Remember, the non-verbal is important too

Non-verbal communication is just as important as what is actually said.  Key investor presentation tips include:

  • Pay attention to what you do when your colleagues are speaking.  Look engaged and interested!
  • Show that you are as interested in your investor as you want them to be in you.
  • Practice – we do extensive rehearsing on camera with clients so that they are investor-ready.

Impressions are everything: investors’ perception of your team is what matters. We’ve fixed many pitch disasters with extensive pitch coaching.
