Communications: Increasingly Important for Private Equity GP-LP Relations

Private Equity firms need to communicate better with their investors (LPs) to ensure fundraising success.  This was the conclusion from the Fundraising Summit at SuperInvestor 2011 in Paris. “Communication and transparency is absolutely key” states Mark O’Hare, CEO of private equity experts Preqin.  Throughout the day funds, investors and IR experts repeated the message that times had changed. “Make your story as clear and simple as possible. Complex stories are not selling in this market” said Gordon Hargreaves …

The Importance of Eye Contact when Presenting and Speaking in Public

Imagine I came to ask you for some help. What would you think if  I did not look you in the eye? Or if I avoided your gaze? Or if I looked down every time I said something? What impression do you get? We like people who can make eye contact (remember the last time you were flirting with someone?). We trust people who can  ”look you in the eye”. We want to see people “eye-to-eye”. When presenting or speaking in public you …

Re-Engineer your Presentations July 22nd, 2011 | Add a Comment

If you want really effective presentations, you need to re-think how you prepare them.  If you, like most people, switch to PowerPoint as soon as you hear the word ‘presentation’, then we have something to show you. We suggest you completely re-engineer how you approach your presentations.  Forget PowerPoint. The best presentations start with a lot of thinking and a blank sheet of paper.  Before you write anything, you need to: Work out exactly who your audience is (e.g. it it really everyone in the room, or just those 5 people who matter? ) Be clear on what you want to achieve with your presentation (am I really going to sell the idea at this stage, or do I  want not to be rejected) Plan a Hook (how will I grab attention early on) Identify a …

In this case, Imagine you are a fund looking for investors FIRST – WHAT NOT TO DO - Don’t rush - Don’t just pack the encounter with facts - Don’t do all the talking - Don’t aim to run through a scripted pitch INSTEAD – PREPARE USING THESE 10 STEPS: Start each encounter with an introduction and a swap of cards – learn the other person’s name Ask some questions first – for example, to an investor, ‘What type of investments are you looking for now’ Listen to the answer for clues that tie their needs with what you offer If there is clearly no fit, say so – but ask if they would be interested in hearing more – in case they …

Top Tips: Preparing for a Presentation May 26th, 2011 | Add a Comment

If you have a presentation coming up, here is a step-by-step guide to make your life easier. This summarises many of the points that arise when we work with our clients to develop confident and effective presentations. You will save yourself a huge amount of time by following this planning process: Do NOT open PowerPoint Be clear on who your audience is and what you want to achieve. For example, you might be addressing just 10 people in an audience of 1000; or you might want everyone in the room to change their behaviour slightly. The more tightly you define your objective, the greater your chance of success. The better you understand your audience, their fears, concerns and desires, the more focused you will be. Have a single message that summarises your talk – boil …

Money Mavericks – Confessions of a Hedge Fund Manager April 22nd, 2011 | Add a Comment

Just finished this book by Lars Kroijer. Highly recommended. I particularly liked his quote about being at a hedge-fund manager conference. “The managers all have charts and graphs with bubbles and arrows going everywhere with long lists of their special edge in the market, all called something from a business-school textbook like ‘our alpha machine’ or ‘our sustainable competitive advantage’. You usually find many of the hedge-fund managers self-absorbed and arrogant, clearly having been told a few too many times how smart and special they are….By the ninth meeting you are exhausted and can’t remember who said what.” If your hedge fund pitches are also having this problem, then you need some assistance. At Benjamin Ball Associates we can help you put together an impressive investor pitch …

The Problem with PowerPoint presentations September 13th, 2010 | Add a Comment

Over the years of coaching senior people with their presentations to staff, to clients, to conferences and to shareholders, we have seen the same mistakes being made again and again. (By the way, when I talk about PowerPoint here, I mean any similar software programme) These are the mistakes that others make: Planning with PowerPoint – When people hear the word ‘Presentation’ they often rush for their PC. Instead, they should sit and think for a bit and start planning on a blank sheet of paper. Not being clear on what you want to say – A good presentation has a clear purpose.  Make sure you can articulate your purpose clearly. Thinking that “the Presentation” is a set of slides – As we always remind people, YOU are the presentation. …

Pitching to investors – the most common mistakes made by hedge funds June 3rd, 2010 | Add a Comment

Many hedge funds could be better at pitching to investors.  From our work, helping teams pitch and persuade more effectively, we have identified the five  most common investment pitching mistakes: 1. Not understanding the investor. Too many people go out with a generic presentation and expect it to work for everyone.  You should personalise for each investor.  For example, their attitude to risk, their history of investing and their mandate will all drive how they listen to you.  By  understanding what matters to that investor you can become very persuasive. 2. Over-reliance on Power Point. While written materials are important, an investor pitch meeting is all about the people.  Don’t let your document drive the meeting. 3.  Too much focus on you. A good investment pitch is about the investor, not about …

How NOT to Prepare a Presentation February 2nd, 2010 | Add a Comment

This what most people do to prepare presentations: Switch on their computer Open up PowerPoint Search out other presentations given recently Start making changes to PowerPoint slides Print out the first batch of slides Scribble all over them Re-edit these slides Keep on at the slides until late at night Work at it over the weekend Give it to a colleague to look at Incorporate those comments Work until late at night again Rehearse in the taxi on the way to the meeting Start with “Hello, my name is John Smith and I am here today to talk about…..” This process is akin to making a movie by going out with a camera hoping to find interesting things to film. It is why so many presentations are deathly boring. Get in touch to learn a much better way of preparing a compelling persuasive presentation …

I am often asked for a few tips on putting presentations and talks together. To complement the various guides I have written and courses I run, I have assembled this collection of quotations which get across the advice that most people require for effective presentations. “There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all” Peter F Drucker “If you can’t write your idea on the back of my calling card, you …
